Vegas Water Rate Impact

Las Vegas homeowners are subject to the LVVWD Tiered Rate Schedule. The rates are tiered to encourage conservation: the more water a home uses in a billing period, the higher the rate on the extra gallons.

A "silent leak" like a running toilet can easily add 3,000 to 5,000 gallons per month to your bill. That volume costs more on its own, and it pushes more of your usage into the Tier 3 and Tier 4 rates, where each extra 1,000 gallons costs up to nearly four times the Tier 1 rate.

Current LVVWD Residential Tiers

• Tier 1 (Essential), first 5,000 gal: $1.61 per 1,000 Gal
• Tier 2 (Standard), next 5,000 gal: $2.87 per 1,000 Gal
• Tier 3 (Elevated), next 10,000 gal: $4.27 per 1,000 Gal
• Tier 4 (Excessive), over 20,000 gal: $6.33 per 1,000 Gal

Not included in the figures above: LVVWD also adds an excessive use charge of $9 per 1,000 gallons used above a seasonal daily threshold for single-family homes. A long-running leak is exactly the thing that pushes a household past that threshold, so a real bill can run higher than this tool shows. Check your own threshold with the water district.

Hard Water & Leaks

The high mineral content in Vegas water (Hard Water) accelerates the degradation of rubber flappers and fixture seals. This leads to slow drips that go unnoticed and add up on the bill.

If your bill has increased by more than 20% without a change in habits, it is worth checking for a leak in your main line, a fixture or the irrigation system.
